Alyssa B. Chapital

Dr. Alyssa B. Chapital is an Associate Professor of Surgery in the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science.  She joined Mayo in 2006 and has been a Consultant in the Department of Critical Care and Department of Surgery.  She also serves as the Medical Director for the Mayo Clinic Hospital, Chair of the Enterprise Hospital Practice Subcommittee, Vice Chair of Space and Capital Subcommittee as well as Co-Vice Chair of the Executive Operations Team. Dr. Chapital led the Hospital Incident Command for the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Chapital completed her BS degree in Biology at Michigan State University in East Lansing; her MD degree at Wayne State University in Detroit; her General Surgery Residency at St. John Hospital and Medical Center in Detroit; and her Fellowship in Surgical Critical Care at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu.  She also obtained a Masters and Ph.D. degree in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Hawaii as well as received an MBA degree from the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

Dr. Chapital is Board Certified in Surgery with Added Qualifications in Surgical Critical Care from the American Board of Surgery.  She received the Surgical Residency Teacher of the Year Award from the General Surgery Residency Program at Mayo Clinic in 2009 and 2010.  She is a Fellow in the American College of Chest Physicians and American College of Surgeons and a Member of numerous other professional medical societies.  She serves as an Ambassador for St. Luke’s Foundation for Haiti. She also is the Executive Sponsor for the Global Mayo Employee Resource Group and a member of the Executive Board for the Mayo Clinic Global Health Program.

Her research interests include:  Global health, acute surgical outcomes, hospital administration, quality, and safety.  She has 36 peer reviewed articles; two book chapters, and 16 abstracts related to her fields of interest
